OBJECTIVES
To explore and understand various aspects of underdevelopment in third world countries, with special reference to India.
2.
To gain insight into social development: its nature, meaning, models, strategies and major areas.
3.
To develop critical understanding of social policy and its linkage with developmental issues, social policy, plans and Programs.
4.
To develop an appreciation for relevance of social policy and planning to social work practice.
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (COURSES CONTENT)
1.
Social change, modernization and development; Concepts and theories; social change among third world societies; social change and development; social and economic systems.
2.
Characteristics of underdevelopment; economic growth and economic development; social development, human development and sustainable development; measurement of development (economic and social indicators); introduction to national analysis and cost benefits.
3.
Social development; models strategies and major areas; social thought and the evolution of the concept of social development; peoples participation in social development.
4.
Globalization, structural adjustment and new economic policy, their impact on society in general and socially disadvantaged and vulnerable groups in particular; need for social safety net.
5.
Social inequality; concept and relationship with social development; social expressions of inequality in India.
