Remember
the Latur and Bhuj earthquakes, the super-cyclone that struck Orissa,
the drought in Gujarat and Rajasthan, floods in Uttar Pradesh and
Assam, the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, major train disasters, and the sufferings
of millions as a result? How can their misery be mitigated?
Remember the pollution of the rivers of India and of air in almost
all major cities of the country posing a health hazard to the entire
population? How can the hazards be reduced?
Remember
those thousands of NGOs, government departments and coroprate houses
in country persevering to help humanity but not being able to do
much in most cases.
How can their efforts be made more effective?
The
answer to the problems of environmental improvement, disaster management,
and NGO efficiency is the same.
The answer is trained manpower in respective fields.
And the need is urgent.
The institute for Environmental Management and Social Development
at
Gurgaon in the National Capital Region is doing its bit to fill
the gap--to train such
manpower.
